How to Play Diffle – The Free Daily Word Game With No Length Limit
Welcome to the official home of Diffle, the free daily word game where your guesses can be any length. Guess the hidden word using as few letters as possible — after every guess, color hints reveal which letters are in the answer, whether they're in the right order, and which sit next to each other. A new puzzle drops every day.
What is Diffle?
Diffle is a Wordle-inspired word-guessing game with one big twist: you don't know how long the answer is. The hidden word can be anywhere from a few letters to ten, so every round starts as a genuine mystery. There's no guess limit either — instead of racing a counter, you're trying to solve the word in as few total letters as possible.
Diffle was created by indie developer hedalu244 and is now cared for by Hey, Good Game, a small studio that keeps beloved daily puzzles running — this is its official home.
How is Diffle Different from Wordle?
If Wordle is a sprint, Diffle is a puzzle box. Here's the quick comparison:
| Wordle | Diffle | |
|---|---|---|
| Word length | Always 5 letters | Unknown — could be 1 to 10 letters |
| Guesses | 6 maximum | Unlimited |
| Hints | Right letter, right spot | Letters in order, and joined when adjacent |
| Score | How many guesses | How few words and letters you used |
Because the length is hidden, Diffle's hints tell you about the order of letters rather than exact positions. That one change makes it play like a whole new game, even if you've solved a thousand Wordles. Looking for more games like Wordle? Browse our guide to the best Wordle alternatives.
How to Play Diffle
Type any valid English word and hit Enter — your guess can be longer or shorter than the answer. After each guess, the tiles change color to show how close you are. Use those hints to shape your next word, and keep going until you find it. There's no penalty for guessing, but every letter counts toward your final score.
Reading the Hints: Examples
Gray letters are not in the word.
The letters E, A, and L are in the word in this order.
The letter P is in the word but not before the E.
The letter MPL is in the word in a row.
The word starts with E and ends with LE.
This is the answer word.
Diffle Strategy: How to Solve in Fewer Letters
Open with a letter-rich probe
Since you don't know the answer's length, start with a five-or-six-letter word that samples common letters — vowels plus workhorses like R, S, T, L and N. Words like snail, ratio or tears tell you a lot for their size.
Build around green runs
When green letters join together, you've found a sequence that appears in the answer exactly in that order. Treat it like a word fragment: try common prefixes and suffixes around it instead of re-testing letters you already know.
Watch the squared edges
A squared-off left edge means your guess starts with the same letter as the answer; a squared right edge means it ends the same way. Those anchors narrow the possibilities fast — especially endings like -le, -ing and -er.
Short words are cheap questions
With no guess limit, a quick three-letter probe can settle a doubt for only three letters — often cheaper than committing to a long word built on a hunch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Diffle similar to Wordle?
Yes — Diffle is the word game like Wordle, without the character limit. You get the same color-hint solving loop, but the answer's length is hidden, guesses are unlimited, and your score is the total letters you used. Fans of one usually love the other.
How many guesses do you get in Diffle?
As many as you need. Diffle doesn't cap your guesses — it scores you on how few words and letters it took to find the answer. Solving in fewer letters is the real challenge.
What's the best starting word for Diffle?
There's no single best opener, but strong choices pack common letters into five or six tiles — think snail, ratio, irate or tones. Because hints are about order rather than position, a vowel-heavy opener that spreads letters across the alphabet gives you the most to work with.
Is Diffle free?
Completely free, right in your browser. A free Hey, Good Game account is optional — it backs up your stats and streak across devices, but you can play without one.
When does a new Diffle come out?
A new puzzle is available every day at midnight in your local timezone. Everyone gets the same word on the same day, so you can compare scores with friends.
What happened to the original Diffle site?
Diffle moved from its original home at hedalu244.github.io to diffle.com in July 2026. Stats and streaks from the old site carried over as part of the move.
